Independent schools are self-governed, non-profit, private
elementary and secondary schools. They may be secular or religious-affiliated,
day or boarding, single-sex or co-educational. Moreover their
support comes from tuition, private gifts, endowments, and annual
giving.
Over the last two decades, independent schools have made progress in diversifying their student and faculty populations. As it stands now, teachers of color represent 11% of independent school faculties. Administrators of color are 8% of administrators at independent schools. More and more opportunities exist in independent schools for individuals who want to be a part of diverse and inclusive school communities.
Additionally, independent schools offer teachers an opportunity to make a difference
in the lives of their students. Teachers help to shape the curriculum
and classes are small. Most have excellent benefits and professional
development opportunities.
